On this painting you see me taking in a self portrait as a soldier by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. This is a powerful Expressionist painting from 1915 that critiques the trauma and devastation of World War I through symbolism rather than a literal depiction of war.

The most prominent symbol is the bandaged, bleeding stump where Kirchner's right hand should be, representing both his inability to paint and a broader loss of function, function as an artist as a result of the psychological impact of the war.
