Artwork description
San Francisco, California, 2003, Kodak Portra NC.
A coral-red American sedan sits anchored on a quiet street, its faded chrome curves glowing against the cool sage green of a mid-century San Francisco facade. A electric blue neon sign bleeds in from the edge of the frame, and the boxy geometry of a window air conditioning unit juts from the wall above — small, incidental details that together create an image of almost painterly precision. It is precisely this kind of found harmony that draws comparison to the work of William Eggleston; the extraordinary hidden in plain sight, the poetry of the everyday American street.
Shot on a Leica M6 with Kodak Portra NC film, the image carries the warmth and grain that only analogue photography can offer — a quality no digital file can replicate. All of Gary's work is captured full frame, exactly as the scene appeared. Nothing is cropped, nothing is manipulated. What you see is what was there.
Each print is made entirely by hand in Gary's own studio, on Hahnemühle Bamboo archival paper — chosen for its exceptional tonal range and environmental credentials. Every stage, from camera to finished print, is carried out by Gary himself. Never outsourced. Always personal.
