This is a small square study of the same hydrangea I'm painting through the series — a plant I brought home as a young sapling from Kebun Raya Bali, the botanical garden in the mountains of North Bali. I caught it on the day the petals had pushed all the way into deep sapphire — past violet, past cobalt, into that almost gemstone blue.
Heavy palette-knife petals build up from the canvas in real peaks of paint. The leaves are cut in single broad strokes — green, weighty, anchoring the flowers down. Behind the bouquet, vertical drips fall from the top edge to the bottom: a recurring motif in my floral work — a quiet way of saying the flower was already changing while I painted it.
The sides of the canvas are painted in soft grey-blue so the composition continues around the edge — the work is ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
This is part of my Hydrangea Jewels series — small studies named after the gemstone each blossom evokes (Cobalt, Sapphire, with more to come). The 30 × 30 cm format works on a focused wall: a kitchen alcove or backsplash, the space beside a doorway, a console table, a reading shelf. The deep blue carries even at a small scale — it reads from across a room.
