According to tradition, at dawn on 29 September 1504 the Madonna appeared, promising the cessation of the plague if a temple was built in her honor in the exact spot where she appeared. The people of Tirano, comforted by a series of events considered miraculous, immediately took action and on 25 March 1505, during a solemn ceremony, the foundation stone of the building was laid.
The town of Tirano, in the heart of Valtellina, is famous as the starting point of the Bernina red train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
