Le colonne di San Lorenzo (2024) Photograph by Andrea Viviani

40 x 50cm (unframed)

£1,028.62

When photographing convex ceramic mirrors—crafted using an ancient technique involving silver nitrate glazes reduced through the self-combustion of dried leaves in contact with the red-hot ceramic inside a sealed container—the photographer (or at least the camera) is reflected in the image, thereby becoming part of the scene being photographed. This study focused on specially created ceramic mirrors featuring various shapes and reflective qualities. Through the lens, the images take on an unstable shimmer imparted by the form and the glazes; these elements cause the outlines to vibrate and dematerialize the images as light thickens and slides across the opalescent surface, rendering them almost liquid.
