Landscape of Auvergne, France.

This small canvas is part of a series of studies, quick conversations with the river.

There was this rock, a boulder of almost milky whiteness, covered here and there with moss and lichen, worn and polished by millennia of flowing water. Behind it, in the cool, damp shade, the old trunk of a beech tree seemed to protect it, its roots sinking into the riverbank like dark claws. And all around, the ceaseless flow of the Sumène, a constant murmur, a rustle of greens, of ochre reflections and flashes of pure light. It was not merely a rock at the water's edge, but the encounter between the permanence of stone and the transience of water, a meditation on the passage of time and what remains.

The white finish on the sides of the canvas allows it to be hung without a frame, should you wish.

Materials used:

This painting is painted with professional grade oil colors on a primed canvas. I prepare myself my canvases to create a texture specific to my painting needs and to insure them maximum longevity.
