Rainy Puddles Bring Me Comfort (2024) Original Oil Painting by Eliza Kołodziej

During my walks back from the Academy of Fine Arts, I often found myself looking down instead of ahead. Wet asphalt, scattered leaves and reflections of streetlights became small moments that made the journey home feel different.

This particular evening was one of the lonelier ones. As I watched the raindrops disturb the reflections in the puddles, my frustration slowly gave way to calm. The light spread across the wet surface in warm yellows, deep blues and dark shadows, making an ordinary pavement feel unexpectedly beautiful.

I painted this work from memory, wanting to hold onto that feeling. Sometimes rain doesn't make the world seem darker - it slows everything down just enough for me to notice details I would otherwise walk past.
