Original artwork description
There is no longer anyone alive who faught in the horror of those fields in Flanders during the First World War and the family threads which tie myself, like so many others to that generation grow ever weaker as each year passes.
It may be that the commemorations which have been taking place recently in recognition of the 100 years since the Great War will be the last of any major significance. And yet the war has influenced, however indirectly, each and every one of us and the world in which we now live.
I wanted to create a series of paintings which depict some of the images of the environment in which so many soldiers found themselves in Flanders, both the horrors and the quiet beauty of the area.
This piece was commissioned by a collector as a personalised, larger version of the original painting of the same title. This piece is a reference to the collector's time serving in Belfast in the 1970/80's.
