About Rebecca Pells

  • Biography
Creativity is the process of conception to reality – like viewing the horizon and then walking into it. A beckoning whisper of something long hidden begins to reveal itself – the anticipation of being let go into something deeper, beyond everyday living.

The subject matter of my paintings depict something of this – they are a reflection of my personal emotive story, a visible diary of something nebulous that words alone fail to convey. A wise friend said to me "you don't paint still-life - you paint absent lives". It was a lightbulb moment - one when my painting began to make sense to me! It may be objects I paint, but the meaning is in the absence of those who once owned - or even made - the vase or the jug, or wrote or read the book. The backgrounds of my paintings are equally important. I think of them as walls - layers of crumbling plaster or peeling wallpaper, witnesses to lives which were once lived within them. Favouring a muted palette the subject and colours suggest an essence of time past, fading memories captured on canvas.

I'm largely self-taught but learning is a process which will never be complete!  I started with acrylics but made the transition to oils in 2016.  They suit my work so much better in terms of the subject and style and that I am a slow worker! Each piece has a great deal of thought -I sometimes wish I could speed up, be prolific. But that would not be me and it would not be my painting.

My work sells internationally and features in private collections in USA, Australia, Spain, France, Ireland and the UK.
