About Amanda Lakin Art

Biography

I live and and work on the fringe of the stunning Peak District national park, where the colour and texture of the shifting seasons provides a constant source of inspiration for me.Through my practice I represent ephemeral moments that are long forgotten. I have been working with vintage homeware for the past 7 years from a retail studio space adjacent to a salvage yard. I create an iterative diary through my paintings of the objects that I find, building up layers and scraping back to reveal hidden surfaces, referencing my previous education in textiles and printmaking. The shapes, colours and textures of handmade objects stimulate memories, the fingerprints or scored marks of the maker represent a specific moment in time, I use storytelling to re-enliven these histories within my work.
I walk daily with my dog, absorbing my surroundings and enjoying experiencing the elements throughout the changing seasons. I work from resource material in my studio, a converted shepherd’s hut in our garden, playing my old vinyl records as I paint.
With its stark contrast of terrain, I also spend a lot of time on the glorious North Norfolk coast, visiting the plentiful bird and nature reserves, expansive beaches with their endless skies, enjoying getting the sand between my toes, with a pencil and sketchbook in my hand.
I paint what I love, mainly still life featuring treasured objects, landscape and seascape, and I also produce to commission.
I paint predominantly in acrylic on repurposed board in vintage frames with a contemporary take on traditional subject matter.
