On the Edge (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Paul Cheng
50.8 x 40.64 x 1.27cm (unframed)

Original artwork description
I wanted to capture one of the most dramatic moments in Western rodeo competition. As the powerful bronc surges through clouds of dust, my goal was not only to express speed and raw energy, but also the timeless struggle between human determination and untamed nature. By reducing the background to its essentials, I focused all attention on the explosive interaction between rider and horse, inviting the viewer to experience the excitement as if standing at the edge of the arena.
I used bold, rhythmic brushstrokes to convey the strength and motion of the bucking horse while simplifying forms to preserve the energy of the action. Warm earth tones contrast with the cooler blues of the rider’s clothing, creating a strong visual focus. Expressive paint splatters, dry-brush textures, and alternating sharp and softened edges enhance the sense of speed, flying dust, and dynamic movement, bringing vitality and excitement to the composition.
