Original artwork description
It was Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee who said 'a line is a dot that went for a walk' but that is to overlook the importance of the dot as an artistic device in itself. Pointillism - dot painting - was originally a term of abuse by art critics in the 1880s who thought that dot-meisters such as Seurat and Signac were quite dotty to paint in this style. As with most new artistic genres, however, Pointillisim eventually gained acceptance and many famous artists made their career out of dot work. Roy Lichtenstein practically based his whole career on his 'Ben-Day' dots; David Hockney might well be an unknown artist right now if the dot - and the Ipad - had not been invented; some paintings of celebrated Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019) are completely dot-tastic. But the point is: when is a dot not a dot? There comes a time when a dots grow up into a ..er. a dash. Van Gogh was more of a dash merchant. But for now, let's hear it for the humble dot - the line that exploded.
