The woman on my painting is enjoying a painting by James McNeill Whistler. It shows the old Battersea bridge in London. Whistler wanted to capture the mood and feeling of a moonlit scene on the Thames, using musical terms like 'nocturne' to emphasize mood over narrative and a limited palette to create a sense of harmony and stillness.
