Some places live inside you long after you have left them. The people and the landscapes we love are never really gone, we just carry them somewhere quieter.
Never Far Away is an original acrylic painting on board, 60 x 50cm, part of my ongoing series The Middle Country. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. Out of that ground came a rich green landscape threaded with water, cockatoos gathered in golden trees, and several figures moving through it at once, walking, rowing, cycling, each finding their own way through the same remembered place.
I paint the things that mean something to me: my family, held in the many figures and birds who move through this glowing, imagined landscape. This one is about the way the places and people we have loved keep living in us, quietly, long after we have left them behind.
