This little painting carries the whole story of my hydrangea series in a 30 × 30 cm square.
The flowers come from the mountains of northern Bali, where I took several vipassana meditation courses. In this practice, meditators observe "anicca" — a fundamental concept in Buddhism. In Pali, anicca means impermanence: nothing stays still, everything is always changing, arising and passing away.
After one of the courses, I bought a young hydrangea plant from a local gardener and took it to my studio in Ubud to paint from life. But hydrangeas change their color depending on the place where they grow. One day I noticed there was more blue in the violet petals than before. The flowers kept changing from day to day, until they became completely blue. So, these flowers are the embodiment of the concept of anicca.
This artwork is part of the limited series "Balinese Hydrangeas" — 12 works.
Oil on cotton canvas, built with palette knife. The petals stand off the canvas in real peaks of paint — blue, violet, lavender and ivory, with green leaves cut in single broad strokes and a soft grey-lilac background. The sides of the canvas are painted so the composition continues around the edge — ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 30 × 30 cm square works on a focused wall: a kitchen alcove or backsplash, a console table, the space beside a doorway, a reading shelf. The blues read even from across a room.
