Mother's Love

Mother's Love is an award-winning original pastel painting exploring one of the most universal bonds in nature — the connection between a mother and her young.

In this portrait, I wanted to move beyond simply capturing the physical beauty and extraordinary character of gorillas. My focus was the tenderness of the relationship between them — the instinct to protect, the feeling of safety and the quiet emotional connection between mother and child.

The intimacy of the composition contrasts with the immense physical strength we associate with these remarkable animals. It is this combination of strength and tenderness that inspired me most.

Created entirely by hand using professional artist-quality pastels on paper, the artwork was gradually developed through many layers. Fine pastel strokes and subtle tonal changes create the texture and depth of the fur, while particular attention was given to the faces and expressions, where I wanted the emotional connection to be strongest.

For me, wildlife portraiture is not simply about realism. I want my paintings to tell a story and remind us that many of the emotions and relationships we consider deeply human are also present throughout the natural world.
