In Luchtalarm, I depart from my signature, quiet museum interiors to present a striking, minimalist modern still life.
The composition is deceptively simple: a mechanical air raid siren cutting sharply into a brilliant, cloudless blue sky. Rendered with crisp, photographic precision, the cold industrial metal stands in stark contrast to the organic vastness of the atmosphere, serving as a powerful vessel for contemporary anxiety and collective memory.
The primary symbolic tension in Luchtalarm lies in its forced duality. To me, the serene blue sky represents peace, freedom, and the uninterrupted flow of daily life. Yet, the mechanical siren looming in the frame acts as an ominous visual punctuation mark. It is a symbol of latent vulnerability—a reminder of how quickly peace can be shattered by geopolitical instability, climate catastrophes, or modern conflict.
By freezing this object in complete silence, I aim to capture the psychological dread of the threat of war, trapping the viewer in the tense space that exists just before panic erupts.
Luchtalarm is meticulously created with acrylic on panel (30x30cm). It comes signed on the front and reverse and it is accompanied by my official studio label alongside a hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity.
