Layers of Time (2026) Original Oil Painting by Julia Swaby

A push and pull method has been used to create the millefeuille effect of this painting, with things being added and taken away. Texture was first created by sinking strips of canvas into a heavy gesso primer - the ribbing is especially striking on the top section. Then each layer of oil paint was allowed to almost dry and rubbed back with mineral essence where still slightly wet to create an old Venetian wall effect. The splatters are meant to resemble other types of weathering.
The artist is particularly interested in this beautiful kind of 'decay', which she sees as a narrative of time.
