Award-Winning Original Pastel Painting

Kittens is an original pastel painting capturing a tender and affectionate moment between two young lions.

Despite the strength and power we associate with lions, their quieter interactions can reveal extraordinary gentleness. In this portrait, I wanted to capture that softer side — a moment of closeness, trust and affection between the two young animals.

Their interaction gives the painting its emotional character. The touching faces and relaxed expressions create an intimate moment that feels immediately familiar, reminding us that affection and companionship are not uniquely human.

The artwork was created entirely by hand using professional artist-quality pastels on paper. Fine layers of pastel and carefully placed individual strokes were used to create the softness and texture of the fur, while particular attention was given to the expressions and subtle interaction between the two lions.

For me, wildlife realism is about more than accurately portraying an animal. I am particularly interested in the relationships and emotions we recognise within the natural world.
