Kambara With Falling Star

A watercolour of a snowy night seen through a window. Panels of blue, patterned like frost and falling snow, sit around a dark central pane scattered with white flecks, with a streak of golden light cutting diagonally across it. Small stars glitter along the bottom, and a bold red border holds it all together.

The inspiration
Kambara: Night Snow is one of the best-loved prints in Hiroshige’s Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833-34), the series that made his name. Kambara was the 16th station on the road between Edo and Kyoto, in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture. This painting is my response to that print.

Ready to frame
Unframed watercolour on 400 gsm watercolour paper, sized to fit a standard 50 x 70 cm mount and frame, so it’s easy and affordable to frame. Shipped flat in sturdy cardboard packaging.

About
I paint small, strange, glowing worlds: night skies, a blossom tree in my garden, half-remembered landscapes. Each one feels like a window, or a fragment of a bigger scene that... Read more
