Indigo Hydrangea belongs to my ongoing hydrangea series — flowers built in palette-knife peaks with vertical drips falling from the blooms. The drips are the point of the series: they mark the flowers as things still moving, still changing while I paint them, nothing stays where it was placed. This one goes deeper into the blues than the earlier work in the series — cobalt, indigo and ink pressed into thick knife strokes against warm cream at the top and moody green-grey below.
Impermanence is the through-line across my work — flowers already changing while I paint them, drips that fall from the blooms because nothing is fixed, plein-air studies caught in the ten minutes before the light drops. In the hydrangea line, the drips carry the whole idea: the flowers are alive because they are still moving.
Acrylic on cotton canvas, built with palette knife over several sessions in Bali. The surface holds real 3D texture — heads stand off the canvas in individual florets, each catching light differently at different times of day. The sides of the canvas are painted so the composition continues around the edge — the work is ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 50 × 40 cm vertical format works over a console, above a low sideboard, in a gallery wall grouping, or above a bedside table. The palette (deep indigo, cobalt, cream, moody green) pairs with warm wood, cream, moody plaster, blue velvet and warm-neutral interiors — reads well in modern contemporary, transitional, and moody-traditional rooms.
