In Where the Night Opens, the landscape is shaped by a single source of light. The moon emerges through an opening in a turbulent sky, illuminating the water below while the surrounding cliffs and distant mountains remain suspended in shadow.
The composition moves vertically from the dark, heavily textured foreground toward the luminous opening above. On the left, the rugged cliff rises almost like a silhouette, its surface constructed through dense layers of oil paint. Across the water, the distant mountain closes the horizon, creating a secluded space between earth, water and sky.
Above it, the painting becomes increasingly expressive. Sweeping passages of blue, turquoise, violet and muted earth tones circle the moon, allowing the clouds to shift between recognizable forms and abstraction. Small traces of warmer color appear within the darkness, intensifying the cool luminosity of the night.
The moonlight descends through the composition and reappears on the water as a broken vertical reflection. Rather than describing light precisely, I wanted the physical surface of the paint to carry it — fragments of pale color emerging from darker layers as the eye moves across the canvas.
At 100 × 80 cm, the scale allows the textured surface and the movement of the sky to become an immersive part of the work. Viewed from a distance, the landscape holds together as a nocturnal scene; seen closely, passages of cliffs, clouds and water dissolve into independent gestures of color and paint.
Part of my ongoing In the Moonlight series, Where the Night Opens explores the boundary between observed landscape and emotional perception — a moment when darkness briefly opens and the familiar world becomes something less certain.
