A study of a single hydrangea, painted after a trip into the mountains in the north of Bali. The wild blooms grow up there at altitude — in the cooler air around Munduk and Bedugul, the flowers open in saturated violet and lavender clusters, far from the soft pastels of European hydrangea gardens. I went specifically to see them. This painting came back with me.

The bloom is built up in heavy palette knife — each petal one full stroke, layered so the paint stands off the canvas. The background is held soft and quiet, except for vertical drips that fall from the bottom of the cluster toward the canvas edge. The drips are intentional. They hold the memory of wet flowers after a brief mountain shower.

A small intimate work — sized for a bedside, a hallway nook, a meditation corner, or grouped with other small floral studies. The texture asks to be seen close.
