I bought this hydrangea as a seedling from a gardener up in the mountains of north Bali, near the botanical garden, and brought it back to my studio. I painted it from life, working from the real plant rather than a photo.

The petals are stacked thick with a palette knife, and the lines bleeding down from the top edge are real gravity, not brushwork. For me those drips are Anicca — the impermanence I practise in vipassana — a reminder that the flower, and everything, is on its way out. At 50 × 40 cm a single bloom fills the frame.

Hang it somewhere you slow down: a bedroom wall, a meditation nook, a narrow hallway you pass twice a day.
