This is the largest piece in my Hydrangea Garden series — a wide horizontal study of a whole hydrangea bed in full bloom. Cobalt blue, indigo, violet, ivory and white blossoms gathered as a single composition, the way I see them growing together in real life. The plants were brought back from the cool mountains of North Bali — from Kebun Raya, the botanical garden up in Bedugul — and bloomed slowly in my Ubud studio while I painted them across multiple sessions.
Oil and acrylic on cotton canvas, painted with palette knife and brush. The petals stand off the canvas in real peaks of paint — each one sculpted in single strokes so the texture catches morning light differently than afternoon. Vertical drips fall from the bouquet through the canvas — a recurring motif in my floral work, a quiet way of saying the flowers were already changing while I painted them.
The sides of the canvas are painted in soft grey-blue so the composition continues around the edge — the work is ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 90 cm horizontal format is built to anchor a large wall — above a sofa, above a king-size bed headboard, a long console in a hallway, a fireplace mantel. At this scale the deep blues and violets carry across a whole room. It is a statement piece — calm in its content, large in its presence.
