Original painting HAL 9000 - 2001: A Space Odyssey
My painting of HAL 9000, the highly advanced artificial intelligence that controlled the spacecraft Discovery in Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’.
HAL is one of the most understated villians in cinematic history, possessing both a calm speech pattern coupled with apparently perfect reasoning. However, his unwavering logic becomes increasingly unsettling as he ultimately turns against the crew.
Kubrick’s ability to visualise HAL’s character using just its red control panel light is both fascinating and sinister.
Here I have painted the chilling and emotionless HAL. This character seems increasingly poignant in the increasingly troubling AI world we now live in.
