There is a wild joy in living exactly as you are, answering to no one. Some people do not ask permission to be themselves, they simply are.
Freedom Song is an original acrylic painting on board, 30 x 20cm, part of my ongoing series The Middle Country. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. Out of that ground came a blaze of red and pink, cockatoos and small birds scattered through tangled branches, and a lone figure moving through it all with her own washing in hand, entirely herself.
I paint the things that mean something to me: my family, held in the figures and the birds who move through this glowing, imagined landscape. This one is about the particular freedom of never needing to shrink, soften, or explain yourself to be who you are.
