Flowers (2022) Original Oil Painting by Ryan Louder

Flowers is a large original oil painting on canvas, 120 x 90 cm, by London artist Ryan Louder.

Two sunflowers take the centre and burn out of a near black green ground, thick impasto petals, disc centres so dark they swallow light. Around them everything else crowds the edges, pink roses at the top, a protea at the right, small white blooms pressed against all four sides of the frame. Warm yellow and pink thrown forward against a background that flattens everything, so the flowers arrive with real force.

This one is about brightness needing somewhere dark to live. The leaves vanish into the background tone at their edges, and I like that, blooms you can see from across the room and edges that give themselves up the moment you get close.
