Resplendent in acrylic, ink and pencil, the five horned rhino beetle is a nectar hungry behemoth!

Native to Asia, this spectacular beetle spends its youth in a larval state, feasting on subterranean rotting wood. Its thick wing casings, a surface that reflects a dizzying spectrum of colours, protect its fragile wings, which are used in early autumn during the beetle's 'flying periods'. I tried to recreate this abundance of iridescent colour in thin layers of acrylic, applied patiently to gain the sense of transparency and brilliance the beetle possesses.

Painted on an MDF panel.
