Oil on canvas. 120cm x 100cm x 4cm. Wide edges in dark grey.
My paintings are often inspired by my love and fascination with ever-changing skies and cloud formation. I try to capture the movement and mood of the skies and sea - Calm and dreamy, to dramatic and surreal. In this piece, I aimed to capture the tempestuous sea off the coast of Anglesey, North Wales, as Storm Ellen brewed, 2020. The great storm swept across the Irish Sea towards the North Wales coast, causing havoc in its wake. There was a foreboding eeriness and deep heaviness above, as the sea swelled, retaliating against Ellen's furious winds. I study the skies over the Cheshire hills, close to my home and also the coastal skies over Anglesey, North Wales, The sky's layers and rolling waves are developed by forming texture through layering and blending the oil paint, building depth, movement and highlights.
