Damina russa (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Olivia Gozzano

This artwork unites my two souls: my conceptual background as a photographer and the visceral need to get my hands dirty with raw materials. On a reclaimed wooden panel, I fused a photographic image transfer of the face with an instinctive layering of acrylics, glues, stencils, and spray paint. I chose wood precisely for its rough, unfinished edges, which tell a story of their own and transform the painting into a tangible, textured object.
The piece is special because of its temporal short-circuit: it takes a black-and-white icon from the early 1900s and forcefully catapults her into the contemporary world. It is a one-of-a-kind, high-impact artwork, capable of bringing a powerful, mystical female figure into a modern visual landscape.
