Brothers (2023) Original Pastel Drawing by Deimante Bruzguliene

Brothers

Award-Winning Original Pastel Painting

Brothers is an original pastel wildlife painting exploring the powerful bond and connection between two lions.

What inspired me most about this composition was not simply the strength and beauty of the animals, but their relationship with one another. Lions are symbols of power and courage, yet in quieter moments they can also reveal companionship, trust and a remarkable sense of connection.

With Brothers, I wanted to capture that contrast — two magnificent animals whose physical strength is unmistakable, while the closeness between them gives the painting its emotional character.

The composition allowed me to explore both individuality and connection. Each lion has his own expression and presence, yet together they create a single story.

The artwork was created entirely by hand using professional artist-quality pastels on paper. I gradually developed the portrait through many layers, combining soft tonal transitions with fine individual pastel strokes to create depth, texture and the natural character of the lions' fur and manes.

For me, wildlife realism is about more than technical detail. I want my paintings to communicate something about the animals themselves — their character, relationships and emotional presence.
