Original artwork description
Signal Rating: 5/10 — Moderate
Classification: Hypnagogic
This painting by Ryan Louder is part of a body of work shaped by his neurological condition — Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. The work contains hypnagogic imagery — embedded secondary images, phantom figures, and forms emerging from within the scene.
Neuroaesthetic markers identified: Klüver form constants (lattice/radial); pareidolic embedding; secondary image potential in stacked structures; circular form as orb
These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. Ryan has painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold. Each painting in this collection has been subjected to neuroaesthetic forensic analysis to identify and catalogue the perceptual phenomena present.
Stacked rectangular forms at left read as books — horizontal bands of blue, red, ochre, and cream — though their geometry flattens toward abstraction. A large circular form in deep crimson-red occupies the centre-right, positioned ambiguously as orb, lamp, or compressed solar form. Diagonal slashes of orange and ochre fill the right half with directional energy. The marks throughout are rapid, applied without concern for edge resolution, so individual objects press against one another and lose their identities into the surrounding colour field. The overall temperature is hot — ochre, red, orange dominating — with only thin blue accents preventing total saturation.
