I painted Below the Surface as an exploration of depth, reflection, and the quiet movement that exists beneath stillness. Layers of blue-gray paint were pulled across the canvas to create shifting currents and subtle variations of light, while traces of red emerge like signals hidden below the surface. The painting suggests water, memory, atmosphere, and distance without settling into a single interpretation. I wanted the piece to feel calm at first glance, yet reveal greater complexity the longer it is viewed.
