Original artwork description:

I created this series of paintings after our daughter very courageously shared that she was struggling with an eating disorder, as so many people do. This series, entitled "be-YOU-t-ful" is an affirmation of being YOU, of inner beauty & individuality to everyone--but especially to girls & women--in contrast to the idea of "cookie cutter", spray-painted beauty advocated by the beauty, fashion & marketing industries. This modern, expressionist painting, which features a colorfully vibrant still life of assorted cosmetic items (perfume, lipstick, nail polish & necklace) is done in a distorted way to show how distorted our perceptions of ourselves and our body image can become as a result of industries which see us as consumers, not human beings. My message is that you're beautiful just as you are (i.e., "be-YOU") in body, mind, soul, talents, intelligence & abilities. My daughter sought professional help, and now—thank God—she is well in mind and body. These paintings are meant to raise awareness and to offer hope to any individual, family or friend, who is struggling as my daughter was, who will be uplifted by these visible signs of recovery. Alcohol inks, acrylic & oils were used, and the paintings have been given a satin varnish for long life. Hanging hardware is already installed.

Materials used:

alcohol inks, acrylic and oils
