Banana Slices (2026) Original Oil Painting by Nimasha Perera

Cut into rounds and packed together edge to edge, banana slices become something unexpectedly beautiful. This painting zooms in close, filling the entire canvas with soft golden discs, each one revealing the delicate little star at its centre where the seeds sit.

The work is a study in warmth and softness, the near-monochrome palette of yellows, ambers and creams glowing against itself. Painted in oils, the glossy sheen of each fresh-cut slice was built up with careful highlights, capturing that just-sliced juiciness, the tender, yielding texture of ripe banana.

There is comfort here, in the repetition, the warmth, the simple pleasure of a familiar fruit seen up close.
