Original artwork description
Signal Rating: 8/10 — Strong
Classification: Hallucinatory
This painting by Ryan Louder is part of a body of work shaped by his neurological condition — Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. The work contains hallucinatory imagery — geometric form constants, phosphene-like patterns, and perceptual structures consistent with REM intrusion.
Neuroaesthetic markers identified: self-luminous forms; radiant boundary dissolution; figure levitation; tutu as luminous aureole; darkness as void ground
These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. Ryan has painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold. Each painting in this collection has been subjected to neuroaesthetic forensic analysis to identify and catalogue the perceptual phenomena present.
A figure seen from behind occupies the lower centre — seated, shoulders bare, hair pinned up, wearing a tutu of deep turquoise-teal. The back is modelled in warm ochre-brown against which the dress reads as a chromatic event: the teal garment is by far the most saturated element in the scene. From the upper right, a narrow panel of cooler teal-blue light enters the otherwise dark interior, providing the only external illumination. The surrounding ground is deep brown-black, undifferentiated; forms suggested in the wings are absorbed into that dark without resolving. The figure's inwardness is absolute — directed entirely away from the viewer.
