There is a season that turns the whole world golden and asks nothing of you but to surrender to it. Stand in a warm autumn wind long enough and you feel it carry you somewhere wordless.
Autumn Moon is an original acrylic painting on board, 20 x 30cm, part of my ongoing series The Middle Country. It began the way these paintings always do, with a loose, accidental ground, half accident and half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. Out of that ground came a swirl of gold and violet, birds carried on an unseen current, and a lone figure moving with the wind rather than against it.
I paint the things that mean something to me: my family, held in the figures who move through this glowing, imagined landscape. This one is about surrender in its gentlest form, the particular peace of letting a season take you somewhere you didn't plan to go.
