Original artwork description
Signal Rating: 7/10 — Significant
Classification: Hypnagogic
This painting by Ryan Louder is part of a body of work shaped by his neurological condition — Narcolepsy with REM Intrusion Hallucinations, clinically confirmed via MSLT at Guy's Hospital, London. The work contains hypnagogic imagery — embedded secondary images, phantom figures, and forms emerging from within the scene.
Neuroaesthetic markers identified: Klüver form constants (tunnel/lattice/diagonal); boundary dissolution; kinetic form emergence; self-organising colour field
These markers are not deliberate artistic techniques but direct visual recordings of what REM intrusion hallucinations look like. The imagery emerges from neurological experience, not metaphor. Ryan has painted over 2,000 works, with over 1,000 originals sold. Each painting in this collection has been subjected to neuroaesthetic forensic analysis to identify and catalogue the perceptual phenomena present.
Hard-edged geometric forms occupy the canvas in a compressed arrangement: a large blue-grey arc curves across the right, enclosing a wedge of pale pink-white within which two triangular forms sit — one yellow, one deeper ochre, angles pointing left. A solid blue circle holds the upper left; below it, a reddish-pink field carries textured diagonal marks. At the right edge, a smaller warm-toned circle. A yellow horizontal band runs across the lower portion. The borders between zones are generally clean but handmade — made by direct paint contact, not mechanical means. The overall field offers saturated primaries and secondaries in flat or near-flat application, the geometry suggesting structural residue of something more complex, reduced to its skeleton.
