A River Never Looks the Same Twice (2025) Original Oil Painting by Aleksandr Dubrovskyy

What kept bringing me back was not the place itself, but how quickly it changed.
I worked beside this river over several days. By the time I returned, yesterday's colours had gone. A dark reflection had become blue; a quiet patch of water was suddenly crossed by sunlight; greens that looked cool in the morning became warm by afternoon.
That constant change became the subject of the painting.
I let the trees hold their weight and density, while the river remains less certain. Violet, olive, blue and ochre meet on the surface, separate around the stones and appear again farther downstream.
That is why I called it The Spirit of the River. For me, the spirit is simply the part that cannot be held still. You return to the same place, but you never really see the same river.
