I painted A Mountain to the North after a trip to the Albanian Alps. I saw distant mountains rising to the north, and all around me were the trees of autumn. To the south of me was a bottomless blue lake shrouded in mist that seemed to join the earth and land together.
To the west was a sloppy path leading to abandoned villages. To the east was a river. I chose to walk north.
painting is also inspired by Krasznahorkai’s novel A Mountain to the North, a Lake to The South, Paths to the West, a River to the East, in which the grandson of Prince Genji struggles to achieve infinity within a limitless monastery..
