  • Biography

Shelli became a professional artist later in her life.  She started painting in 2001 after viewing self-taught artists on Ebay and thinking she could do just as well, if not better.  She has no formal training in art except a couple of Art History and Art Studio classes in college and a few studio courses at the Central Iowa Art Association and a couple of workshops in and around Iowa.  That being said, she knows what she likes when it comes to art – vibrant colors and highly textured surfaces are at the top of her list.  Two- and Three Dimensional art that conveys emotion through the use of color and texture is her favorite.  You’ll find influences of Willem de Kooning, Romare Bearden, Giacometti, and of course, Picasso in her work.  She formally opened her professional art business, StressArt, in 2010.

Recently she has been experimenting with using shipping materials to create texture and with brilliant inks to contrast with that texture.  The texture and/or color create ethereal, soothing, and sometimes even discordant emotional landscapes.

Shelli has most recently shown work in the December 2013 Central Iowa Art Association’s show where artists created works of art using the Fisher Impressionist and Sculpture, or CIAA Ceramics Study Collections as muse.  Her piece “AFFABLE BLUE” won Best in Show – juried by visitors to the show’s reception – this piece is on view at The Perfect Setting in Marshalltown, IA along with a companion piece titled “IOWA SUNSET” that Shelli created after the Dec. show.  She has also shown work in the August, 2013 Women’s Show at the CIAA, and solo show in 2009 at the CIAA.  In 2014 her work was shown at the 2014 Jean Seberg International Film Festival and just this past September of 2015 she had a solo show, "What Lies Beneath" at the Ray Frederick Gallery at Marshalltown Community College.  Look for her work in the near future online at Artfinder.

Shelli says she challenges visitors of the exhibit to “look for what is underneath”.

“What started this exploration of ‘beneath’ or ‘under’ was the saddest moment of my life—when my father died of a massive heart attack in February of 2012. To me, the past three years have been spent covering my sorrow and pain so that I can be strong enough to help my family through crisis. The paintings for this show were created as a way to deal with my hidden grief and pain, but they were also created as a way to relax, unwind, discover, and release.”
