About Ivana Lavelle

  • Biography
I have been drawing and painting since my childhood.
I have been working as a portrait artist since 2009 and creating self-initiated work mainly landscapes. My work is in private collections in Ireland, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan.
I draw my inspiration from nature and daily observations of human presence in nature. I like to explore the tensions between nature and the built world, the fluidity versus the rigidity. I inject my landscapes with many times humorous human presence in the form of road signs (that often don't make sense in that particular place), structures, gates, phone masts, etc. My landscapes are imagined and constructed from photographs and sketches taken on location. Does a place become a new place when things are moved, removed or added?
I apply this cut and paste process in explorations of the human face in a similar way using photographs of random people to create new constructed faces.
I work with graphite pencil and acrylic on paper, canvas or wood panel.
