Biography
Born in Lima, Peru, Gisella Stapleton is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice celebrates the spirit, resilience, and beauty of women while honouring the richness of Peruvian and Latin American culture. Working primarily in painting and muralism, her work is recognisable for its bold colour palettes, lush botanical motifs, and serene, introspective female figures that embody strength, softness, and cultural pride.
Drawing from memory, folklore, and her own inner world, Stapleton creates poetic scenes where colour becomes emotion and form becomes storytelling. Her women—radiant, grounded, and unapologetically present—exist in harmony with nature, textiles, and ancestral symbols. Through the interplay of oils, acrylics, embroidery, and recycled materials, she weaves tradition into contemporary narratives, resulting in a visual language that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Stapleton began exhibiting her work in Spain after moving from Peru, showcasing at the University of Valladolid and cultural centres including Ronda Barcelona Cultural Centre. Since relocating to London in 2011, she has participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals across the city such as Battersea Arts Centre, the ECOFeminism Festival at the Art Pavilion, and the Via Arts Prize finalist exhibition at the Brazilian Embassy.
Her mural practice has grown significantly in recent years. Known for works that celebrate diversity, identity, and community, she has been commissioned by institutions such as the University of Roehampton and Latin Elephant Charity for public murals in Elephant and Castle. In 2024, she was commissioned by STUDIOCANAL and Visit London to create a large-scale artwork at Sutton Walk (Southbank), portraying Paddington as a multicultural icon—a symbol of London’s vibrant diversity.
Stapleton was invited to an Artist Residency at KEW GARDENS (Dec–Feb 2025), where she created two murals, three large canvas works, and twenty hand-painted pots for the prestigious Orchid Festival 2025. She also contributed to The Big Egg Hunt in London where she exhibited her piece at The Strand in London, and was commissioned by Elmbridge Council to create a community mural for the Vital Village Centre.
Gisella Stapleton currently lives and works in London and Thames Ditton (Surrey)
