About Fiona Philipps

Biography

I have loved creating art since my childhood and went to art college when I left school. I continued to paint whilst bringing up my children. I then decided to return to college and studied for a degree in fine art. I graduated in 2011 and then returned for a further year as a fellow.

Since then I work from my home studio which fits in well around family life. I have taken part in both National and local exhibitions and was shortlisted in the Neo:artprize 2013 neo gallery 22, The Market Place, Bolton with one of my paper sculptures.  Today my practice is mainly painting but I still love sculpture, print and ceramics. I live on the banks of the beautiful Dee estuary where daily walks beside the estuary, its countryside and woodland inform my paintings.

I love to create semi-abstract artworks with lots of texture. Mark making is also an important part of my process. Many of my paintings are created using quite a subtle palette but I find that the seasons have some influence on my chosen colours.

Sometimes my paintings are evoked by my childhood memories of time spent growing up in this beautiful coastal area. I love to walk whatever the weather and as we move from season to season the changes in these surrounding landscapes are documented in my paintings. Some of my paintings are inspired by the manmade structures I see on my journeys. In my work I try to express my own emotional response to this beautiful part of the world.

There are many artists whose work I admire, but I especially love Paul Klee, Andy Goldsworthy, Chris Drury, Peter Randall-Page, Edward Hopper, and Patrick Heron.
