  • Journey to Tiny Islands....

    Journey to Tiny Islands....

This mixed media artwork is informed by the tiny islands that sit at the mouth of the Dee Estuary. This small group of tidal islands are called Little Eye, Middle Eye and the largest island Hilbre. This painting is inspired by visits to these tiny islands across the sands. The Islands are cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to four hours out of every twelve. Strong winds can bring the tide in early. As a child it was my to dream to live on Hilbre Island

Faster Than A Man Can Run....

Faster Than A Man Can Run....

This large abstract painting is part of a series of works created for my Tiny Islands exhibition shown recently at the beautiful seaside Staacks Gallery. The title for this painting is a quote from a man who was talking on a news report about the Solent and its tides. At the time it made me think of the speed at which the estuary tide rushes in filling the gullies and how important it is to always check the tide times if planning a visit to the Islands. Depending on weather conditions sometimes the tide can flow in faster than expected easily trapping anyone out on the sands. My painting also references maps that belonged to my dad and planned routes to follow for a safe crossing. It is also inspired by a memory from many years ago of one of my boys who went out for the day. He returned looking rather sandy. He announced he had visited Hilbre Island with a friend and when I asked him had he checked the times of the tides to my horror he said no! He was very lucky that day and I still go hot when I think about it and what the consequences could have been. He is a lot wiser now.
