About Dimitri Bakhtadze

Biography

I am a photographer working between St Petersburg and Tbilisi—two cities that have shaped the way I observe people, light and the urban environment.

I was born in Leningrad in 1975 and spent my school years in Georgia. Photography entered my life through my family: I inherited a camera and an enlarger from my father, while my grandmother, who loved taking pictures, gave me the instinct to press the shutter. During my years in Georgia, I also attended a local photography club.

In 2013, I graduated from the Yury Galperin Photojournalism Department at the Leningrad House of Journalists. My practice centres on street photography, reportage and documentary observation. I photograph not out of obligation, but out of an inner necessity to see, feel and understand more deeply what is happening around me. I am particularly interested in people, light, the character of urban space, the intonation of the street and authentic moments that cannot be repeated.

I work in both black and white and colour. My portfolio ranges from individual street photographs, portraits and studies of light and abstraction to extended documentary stories and travel series. Living between Russia and Georgia gives my work a dual sense of place and belonging.

My photographs have been presented in solo and group exhibitions, including the Contemporary Photography Biennale at the Russian Museum and the final exhibition of KOLGA TBILISI PHOTO. In 2025, I received an honourable mention at the FotoKrok International Festival of Photography and was ranked among the Top 70 photographers in the Street Photography category of the 10th 35AWARDS. In 2026, I presented a solo exhibition at MOIKA 104 GALLERY in St Petersburg.

My prints are produced in limited editions of 10. Each work is individually signed and numbered and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
