Yosemite Engine Company
Francois de Melogue
2026 | Archival pigment print on archival satin photo paper. | 17 x 25

The Yosemite Engine Company stands at the edge of Chester village on a
morning when the hills have gone the particular green of late May, a color
almost too saturated to believe. The building is old red clapboard, its
paint cracked to the grain in places, the white trim still crisp against
it. A hose tower rises from the center peak, cedar-shingled at the cap, a
small window at its crown looking out over nothing in particular. Across
the lawn, dandelions have seeded themselves into the grass, yellow going to
white. Behind the station, the white dome of the town hall sits against the
hillside, its weathervane still in the warm air.

The sign on the facade reads YOSEMITE ENGINE COMPANY in small, deliberate
letters. The building was raised in 1879 and it still carries the logic of
its purpose: a place where neighbors kept the hoses dry, the bell ready,
and the engine close. The hard Vermont light falls flat against the red
siding and makes every weathered board count. The tower is tall because wet
hose needs height to drain. The windows are where the meetings were held.
Everything means something, and nothing has been added that did not need
to be.

Available in three sizes, each signed and numbered with a certificate of
authenticity:
