Oil painting on canvas
Recent work has been inspired by images of faces appropriated from film, photography and the media, and exploits the conventions of cinematography; heavy cropping, close-ups, angled shots, saturated colours, as well as the use of dialogue for titles.
The works portray fleeting moments, the expression of the subject offering us a glimpse into their innermost thoughts. The works can be interpreted as part conversations, part musings, into which the viewer is drawn willingly or not into the world of the subject, both in a voyeuristic and complicit way.
Sal Jones is a figurative artist inspired by human interplay, she uses photographs as starting points, translating visual sources and ideas into paintings. Colour and mark making are the tools she communicates with to produce emotionally charged works.
