- Wildfires (III)
Original artwork description
Many reports of wildfires taking place all around the world, prompted me to start different series of paintings. Images of trees on fire, branches and trunks lit up by the light of the flames in the darkness of the night, silhouettes of the trees disappearing in the smoke evoked a mixed emotion. On one hand it resembled somewhat the scenes that I paint - fire of setting sun in the sky backlighting the trees, or trees lit up at night in suburban streets and gardens. However, here, the images were not of calm and tranquillity, but of destruction and pain, of the looming environmental crisis, of wars and violence, of the pain, fear and despair. I wanted to paint some of the wildfire scenes as collective images reminding us about the worrying prospects of seeing more and more landscapes like this in the future, opposed to the peaceful and poetic scenes of nature we have so often been taking for granted.
